Understanding Replacements

When you engage the brake pedal, hydraulic fluid commonly known as brake fluid is pressurized via the master cylinder. This fluid travels through the brake lines to the cylinders located at each wheel.

  • Disc Brakes: The most common type, disc brakes consist of a rotor, caliper, and brake pad. Pressing the brake pedal causes hydraulic fluid to move through the lines, prompting the caliper to push the pad against the rotor. This action generates friction, effectively slowing down the vehicle.
  • Drum Brakes: In contrast, drum brakes feature a brake drum and brake shoes. When the brake pedal is pressed, a cylinder pushes the shoes against the inner surface of the drum, creating friction to slow the vehicle.

How Often Should Brakes Be Inspected:

If you notice unusual sounds or experience erratic stopping, it’s crucial to have your brakes inspected without delay. As a general guideline, we recommend checking your brakes during regular tire rotations, typically once or twice a year, in line with most manufacturers’ recommendations.

JJ Auto Repair advises following your manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance schedules and service intervals whenever applicable.
